First of all, he seems to be wrong. You can turn it off.

Question: is there any way to turn it off other than logging out of your account?

I think you're spot on. Google is taking cues from a number of different and wildly successful sites and tying it into their results. Basically this heads off a number of competitive social bookmarking sites at the pass. Brilliant.

It will be interesting to see if their ultimate plan is perhaps not to take this meta-data in isolation, but in aggregate as a small part of their metric. (and further if they'll expand it out to ads and sponsored links).

If it's a way of improving the quality of personal results, great. If like you say the ultimate aim of Google is to provide crowd wisdom to its searches, all the better.

I wouldn't be surprised to see toggles on Google in the near future (like they have on Image Search) to allow you to choose the most valued user results only. This way, you've get rid of the phishing sites and link-fodder that routinely get to the top of search as a result of optimising strategies. There are some things that only human beings will be able to tell Google to filter its results better that no algorithm will be able to portend.

[[ Lloyd - maybe just adjust the stylesheet in your WP design to allow a border on form input field. You can't see where to put your name/comment in Firefox.]]
